Sweet Desserts: What is Gulab Jamun & Why Do We Love It?

Gulab jamun is one of our popular dessert dishes at Everest Dine—and rightfully so. This sweet dish is the perfect way to end a wonderful dining experience at our restaurant, ideal for those with a sweet tooth.

So, what is gulab jamun and why is it so popular?

Let’s find out.

What is Gulab Jamun?

Gulab jamun is a dessert or confectionery (‘mithai’) that originated in India. It is literally translated as ‘rose berry’ or ‘rose water berry’. In Northern Nepal, gulab jamun is also known as lal mohan or laalmohn.

The dish is made from milk solids or powdered milk, mixed with flour to create dough balls that are deep fried. Once fried, the balls are then soaked in a sugar syrup that consists of water, sugar, rose water (or saffron or kewra), and cardamom powder.

They may sometimes be garnished with cashew nuts or almonds. There are many variations of the dish itself.

At Everest Dine, our gulab jamun is incorporated with cottage cheese and served in sweet and sour yoghurt!

The Popularity of Gulab Jamun

Gulab jamun is without a doubt a popular dessert not just in Nepal, but also in other countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, and even in Fiji, Jamaica, and more.

Its popularity can be owed to its long history that can be traced back to India’s Islamic period. As a popular dessert, it is commonly eaten at major celebrations, including birthdays, festivals, marriages, and religious celebrations such as Eid (Muslim) and Diwali (Hindu). In Nepal, you will commonly find gulab jamun, or lal mohan at sweet shops and stalls, especially during the festivals of Tihar, Dashain, and more.
