History
Butter chicken is said to have originated in the 1950s, developed at a restaurant, named Moti Mahal, in Old Delhi. The actual creation of the dish was not on purpose, made with leftover tandoori chicken. Nonetheless, the dish became popular.
It was in 1975 when the term ‘butter chicken’ made rounds on Western print, first appearing as a specialty dish for a restaurant in Manhattan, New York. Over the years, butter chicken’s popularity has skyrocketed, and you can now find butter chicken variations from other South Asian countries.
