5 Tasty, Traditional Nepalese Dishes Every Kiwi Needs To Try

What is typical Nepalese food?

Traditional and authentic Nepalese food is flavourful, reflecting a rich array of textures and aromas. You will find a lot of curries and rice dishes, as well as the use of numerous spices, from turmeric to cumin. Here at Everest Dine, we are a Nepalese restaurant that aims to bring Nepalese dishes to Kiwi customers.

In fact, we have compiled a list of 5 tasty Nepalese dishes that every Kiwi needs to try:

1. Nepali Thali

Nepali thali is a traditional Nepalese dining experience, consisting of several dishes. The dishes can vary, but nepali thali will typically include basmati rice and yellow lentils, curry (meat or vegetables), chutney, leafy greens, and papadoms. For a hearty and filling meal (plus the traditional Nepalese dining experience), you can’t go wrong with Nepali thali.

2. Lamb Ledobhedo

For a traditional Nepalese curry, don’t forget to try lamb ledobhedo – a rich curry with Nepalese herbs and spices. Lamb ledobhedo is a delectable dish that’s ideal for curry lovers, a fusion of fragrant herbs and spices that offer an incredible taste with a slight kick.

3. Chatpate

If you’re a fan of noodles, you’ll want to try this unique Nepalese dish. Consisting of raw noodles mixed with puffed rice and Nepalese salsa, chatpate offers the right amount of crunchiness with spice and tang. This dish is made with dry ramen noodles, various vegetables, and a selection of Nepalese herbs and spices.

4. Smoked Choila

Choila is a Newari dish traditionally made from buffalo meat. Nowadays, lamb leg, chicken, and other meats can also be used. Smoked choila utilises smoked meat that is tossed in a garlic and mustard oil, combined with chillies and other spices. If you’ve got a high spice tolerance, this dish is for you!

5. Momo

Momos are Nepalese stuffed dumplings of a simple flour and water mixture. Momos can be steamed or fried. Filling is usually minced meat, often chicken or pork, but vegan options are also available. You can opt for sadheko momo which tosses fried dumplings in a salsa, or chilly momo which consists of fried dumplings in a Manchurian chilli sauce. Both are great choices for those looking for a hint of heat.
